Rent Movie Year! The a very important factor I love about moving into Los Angeles is the number of revival houses and single screen concert halls you can still go to. I'm not talking about your multiplexes that are playing the most recent Hollywood blockbusters, I'm talking about those historic movie theaters that play in the classic movies we loved watching whenever we were growing up. Many of these films we first watched on tv or rented them on VHS from our local video stores (back when they existed), but we never reached see them for the big screen where they belonged. But because of places like New Beverly Cinema, the Egyptian Theatre and Grauman's Chinese among other movie theatres, we finally get to discover their whereabouts the way they were intended as seen.
Now I know a lot of people who these days would prefer to curl up around the sofa and watch movies at home, however, these cult movies must be seen on the big screen if you are ever in Los Angeles.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
This musical comedy horror cult classic which stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick along with the great Tim Curry like a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania" is the longest-running midnight movie ever. Thirty-eight years after "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" arrived, it is playing in limited release and midnight screenings keep taking place all over America. However, you've not lived til you have seen this movie with the Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica where audience members can be their favorite characters and talk time for the screen in a way they couldn't if this were every other movie. Fans at the Nuart buy treated with a live performance from Sins O' The Flesh, a gaggle of actors that perform with the movie every Saturday night. You can always rely on having a most fantastic time once you watch this movie in the Nuart!
"The Room"
The 2003 romantic drama that has been written, produced, directed and stars Tommy "YOU'RE TEARING ME APART LISA!" Wiseau may be called among the worst films available, and the fans still can't get enough of it. "The Room" is constantly on the sell out midnight screenings in the Regent Theatre in Los Angeles, and it is possible to always count on Wiseau being there to do a Q&A session with all the fans. Audience members come dressed as their best characters, one scene has them throwing plastic spoons in the screen, they will toss footballs to each other during the movie, and so they yell out insults regarding the undeniably bad quality of the film. There are so many things wrong with "The Room," but it is so enjoyable to watch with an audience.
"The Big Lebowski"
Joel and Ethan Coen followed up their masterpiece "Fargo" with this particular dark comedy starring Jeff Bridges as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. The movie was a box office disappointment, but it has since garnered one of the biggest and strangest cult followings of the movie ever made thanks to the main character's unapologetically calm attitude. Screenings of "The Big Lebowski" can be found at various Los Angeles movie theatres, but the real treat for fans occurs when the Lebowski Fest comes to town. The recent Lebowski Fest held on the Saban Theater and Fountain Bowl featured per night of unlimited bowling and also various trivia contests. There was even a performance by The Kyle Gass Band which featured a unique guest appearance by Jack Black as Evil Elvis. Oh yeah, they did show the movie there also.
"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
What "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is always to the Nuart Theatre, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" has quickly become to New Beverly Cinema. The still standing Los Angeles repertory revival house was the first one to show Edgar Wright's film as soon as the end of the company's theatrical run, possesses since taken on a permanent midnight residence alongside "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Wright, who has hosted several movie programs at the New Beverly, turns up at "Scott Pilgrim" screenings to resolve questions through the audience, and he has brought along with him several of the film's stars including Michael Cera. Recently, Mary Elizabeth Winstead who played Ramona, the girl of Scott Pilgrim's dreams, came through the New Beverly to introduce it towards the excited audience there. I make no apologies for naming "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" as my personal favorite movie of 2010.
"Big Trouble in Little China"
Every Los Angeles screening I have experienced of John Carpenter's fighting techinques comedy has always led to a sold-out audience. Thanks to home video, "Big Trouble in Little China" gained a massive cult following, and audiences love it today in ways that you wished they did back when it first became available. It's this type of kick to view this film with an audience as is also in hysterics over Kurt Russell delivering his dialogue with an unapologetic John Wayne swagger, and that we have long since accepted the belief that his character of Jack Burton is more of a blowhard than a hero. It doesn't matter how many times you have experienced this movie; "Big Trouble in Little China" continues to be a blast to determine through.
